Classic American apple pie recipe

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups of all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon of salt
  • 1 teaspoon of sugar
  • 1 cup of unsalted butter, cold and diced
  • 1/4 to 1/2 cup of ice water
  • 8 cups of thinly sliced and peeled Granny Smith apples
  • 1 cup of granulated sugar
  • 3 tablespoons of all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon of ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon of ground nutmeg
  • 1 tablespoon of unsalted butter
  • 1 egg, beaten (for egg wash)

Instructions:

  1. In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, salt, and sugar. Mix well.
  2. Add the diced butter to the flour mixture and, using a pastry cutter or your fingers, work the butter into the flour until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  3. Gradually add the ice water to the mixture, a tablespoon at a time, and mix until the dough comes together. Be careful not to overmix, or the dough will become tough.
  4. Divide the dough in half and shape each half into a disk. Wrap the disks in plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 1 hour.
  5. Preheat the oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C).
  6. In a large mixing bowl, combine the sliced apples, sugar, flour, cinnamon, and nutmeg. Mix well.
  7. Roll out one of the chilled dough disks on a lightly floured surface to fit a 9-inch pie dish.
  8. Carefully transfer the dough to the pie dish and press it firmly into the bottom and up the sides.
  9. Pour the apple mixture into the dough-lined pie dish and dot with the butter.
  10. Roll out the remaining dough disk on a lightly floured surface to fit the top of the pie. Place the dough on top of the apples and press the edges of the top and bottom dough together to seal.
  11. Brush the beaten egg over the top crust.
  12. Bake the pie in the preheated oven for 50-60 minutes, or until the crust is golden brown and the filling is bubbly.
  13. Remove the pie from the oven and let it cool for a few minutes before slicing and serving.

Classic American apple pie is a classic and delicious dessert that is perfect for any occasion.
